Julian Barnes on Madame Bovary

I recommend Julian Barnes‘ recent LRB essay on Flaubert’s 1857 masterpiece, Madame Bovary.  You can read the whole thing for free on the LRB website: fascinating discussion of the difficulties and possibilities of translation, but also some interesting stuff on the novel and its mid-19th-century context.
